Izu Peninsula - East Coast & Skline (伊豆半島、西海岸とスカイライン)

March 8 2026

Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka, Japan

193km, 3601m

Skyline

Riding out from Mishima station on a crisp winter morning - the weather has warmed up slightly over the last week or so, so it might be time to start riding in the mountains again

On our ascent to the Izu skyline we encounter snow at around the 600m mark. We know the top is over 800m so we ride the rest of the climb with caution.

The rest of the road free of ice and snow - a peek at the view from the top of the skyline. Mt Fuji along with the Southern Japanese Alps visible in the background, my pink Winspace gravel bike in the foreground, and the road we ascended in-between.

Thierry crests the top of Nishina Pass before our long descent back down towards the east coast of Izu.

Bamboo forest midway up Jaishi Pass - the last sustained climb before hitting the coast

East Coast

A Beautiful view of Fuji from the east coast. What's great about the east coast of Izu if you can see this view over and over as you ride back north - Fuji gradually getting larger

Another view from the coastal road, this time looking south. Coastal roads are generally flat but this one is not - the cumulative elevation of rolling hills adds up quickly, you should not underestimate the east coast of Izu.

Thierry descends one of the rolling hills on the coast with Fuji in the background

Another beautiful shot of Fuji with a beach in the foreground, somewhere around Nishi Izu. Due to lack of public transport this area is generally quite empty, including the beaches. This information must not make it into the hands of Australians, at all costs.

The coastal rollers completed, we roll back inland towards Mishima as the sun sets
